NaBeela Washington is a Chicago-based photographer, journalist, editor, and researcher whose work examines place, cultural record, and the ways communities document themselves. Her photographic practice moves between documentary portraiture, visual storytelling, oral history, and experimental processes, with a focus on how the full spirit of lived experiences are preserved. She is the creator of Bending Water, an ongoing project documenting Black farmers across Illinois. Washington is also a Renaissance Project Research Scholar with the Chicago Public Library, where her archival research examines historical media coverage of Black communities on Chicago’s West Side. She leads 15 West, an accessibility-first community newsroom, and her writing and criticism have appeared in Newcity and other outlets.
