From Marie Grimm:
"In my body of work, I am creating tension between polarizing acknowledgments that encapsulate my shifting emotional sensations in the domestic space. These sensations revolve around concepts of maternal associations, lingering, sentimental attachments, and sensational dwellings that arise in conflict of my knowing of one thing and another thought complexing it. The emotions I weigh on are captivated by the concept of ‘push and pull’ which perpetuates a lurching, a weaving interlacing foreground and background. The work sets in motion a state of flux that is changing between times of ‘vintage’ past and the thoughts residing in my present. ‘Push and Pull’ finds itself in opposition, a constant tug of war, yet they both still reside as “true”. It is pulverizing while equally overwhelming.
Usages of paint, found fabrics and vibrant materials allow the image to be in a flux caused by the push and pull finding shifts in the varied sensations. The tension of rippling florals, gestural paint and flat patterns obscures parts of the imagery that pushes the image back and forth between the surface space like images refracting on rippling water that once was still. I am enamored with flat patterns and the tension that arises from materiality and floral elements. Its abundance swirls and invokes the desire to cluster and cling to obsessive tactility. I am embraced in its marvelous comfort that is dynamically vulnerable with subtle violations to the senses. I am submerged in its pull to fill my lungs with alternative sharp breaths and calming exhales. The surface tension spills out to be a necessity to formulate the dynamism of abundance.
In relation to choices of synthetic fabrics, thoughts of decorative wall paper seep into the work with its flat pattern that encases its surface. Wallpaper transforms into comfort and finding that can be seen in bed sheets from Grandmother’s and Mother’s that have gathered over the years. There is a history to the fabrics that can be found in the home. It’s gentle and well cared for, yet is stained with usage. The fabric is touched with paint to form a refracting surface of paint, material, and imagery.
I am engulfed.
These emotions flood and ripple through patterns that spread across the spare bed of a late Grandmother’s sheets.
Envelop me under the surface between stars and pools of warmth. I am submerged in the rippling of water.
Don't let me drown in spools of golden gleam."
