Lauren Hanan’s practice begins with collecting what is no longer wanted—the everyday residue of their own consumption. Much of their work emerged from moments of reckoning, such as food spoiling in their refrigerator and single-use plastics accumulating faster than they could ignore. Rather than discarding these reminders of waste, they began working with them. Wilted produce became natural dyes, and plastic packaging was shredded and recombined into new textile forms. These experiments became a way to confront their own habits and the excesses embedded in daily life.

Processes such as hand-stitching and natural dyeing allow them to slow down and work closely with the rhythms of the materials. These tactile practices mirror the intricate relationship between humans and the environment, fostering mindfulness and reflection within their work. Even as they use recycled and naturally sourced materials, they remain aware of the ecological footprint of textile production. This tension prompts them to continually question their role and the sustainability of their practice.
