"Knight in Pink" by Alayla Martin

--

Alayla is a self-taught artist whose work reflects a life lived at intersections of identity, place, and experience. Born and raised in a low-income, village-like neighborhood surrounded by homes and mansions, they were once described in the Chicago Tribune as “the black dot in the white sea.” A Black queer neurodivergent artist, Alayla navigates in-between spaces—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Early support from art teachers and a creatively inclined family member shaped their path. After studying animation and interior architecture design and working in various jobs, painting remained constant. Quiet and observant, Alayla uses art to translate their inner world.
