India ink on wood, 4x4”

Alexander Stockdale captures everyday life and the natural world through an impressionistic lens. Using pigmented India ink brush pens on pure cotton paper, they blend urban sketching with nature journaling to create archival, layered narratives where observation meets imagination. Their works engage in a dialogue between light, shadow, and personal interpretation.

In their Healing Landscapes series, they apply the philosophy of wabi-sabi to ecological restoration. By reclaiming invasive buckthorn, they transform environmental waste into an organic canvas. The wood’s knots, cracks, and weathered "flaws" guide their compositions—a deliberate metaphor for the trials and resilience of the native land. Their brush follows the rhythmic grain, leaning into these imperfections to advocate for the return of the native wild. These pieces also serve as educational tools for woodland recovery and have been exhibited at the Trailside Museum of Natural History, Art City, and the Oak Park Art League.
