This trio of bedazzled dildos combines craft practice with traditionally “girlish” materials to explore themes of desire, lack, gender, and sexuality. This work is informed by my academic, clinical, and personal study of Lacanian psychoanalysis. The phallus is a central concept in Lacanian theory as a signifier for the lack around which we orient our desire. These hand thrown ceramic diodes were originally fully body safe and therefore “fit for purpose”. They were also glazed plain white and rather unassuming. Through the careful work of bedazzling, the dildos are rendered both more visually exciting and no longer usable. The colorful plastic gemstones adhered with white school glue call to the elementary school craft projects of my feminine girlhood. In transforming these dildos, I grapple with the impossibility of total sexual satisfaction through my experience of the feminine.
