Andrew Freeman is a Houston-based contemporary artist whose work examines the unstable terrain of memory, identity, trauma, and perception. Working primarily in abstract painting and mixed media, he creates intensely layered surfaces where vivid colors, fractured forms, architectural imagery, and expressive marks collide. His compositions function as psychological environments—spaces in which memories dissolve, structures become uncertain, and private emotional experiences take on a wider human resonance.
Freeman’s practice moves between abstraction and fragmented narrative. Rather than illustrating a single event or emotion, his paintings invite viewers into states of tension, transformation, confinement, and release. He frequently incorporates unconventional materials, including photographic fragments, puzzle pieces, found objects, wax, wood, and sculptural applications of paint. These physical layers reinforce his interest in the way experience is accumulated, obscured, reconstructed, and remembered.
His artistic development has been shaped by studies at the Glassell School of Art and Art League Houston, where he has pursued painting, drawing, collage, and figurative studies. Freeman has participated in exhibitions and student programs at Art League Houston, the Glassell School of Art, Kinder Morgan, and the Chicago Fine Art Salon. These experiences have supported an evolving visual language rooted in experimentation, introspection, and emotional immediacy.
Although painting remains central to his practice, Freeman’s creative interests also encompass music, writing, and multimedia projects. Across these forms, he explores the relationship between inner experience and outward expression, transforming personal struggle and psychological uncertainty into work that is visceral, searching, and open to interpretation.
