Elena Smentkowski is a 26 year old multimedia artist and writer from Delaware, currently based in Chicago, Illinois. She is a 2021 BFA graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she studied drawing, graphic design, printmaking, journalism, and creative writing. Although currently working with film photography as her primary medium, Elena possesses no formal photography training. Her photos are informed by drawing and graphic design principles of perspective, color theory, and composition. Elena’s work utilizes everyday environments as vehicles for conceptual themes of solipsism, alienation, anti-consumerism, and historic preservation. She is heavily influenced by the work of artists William Eggleston, Laurie Simmons, Mary Ellen Mark, and Lise Sarfati. Elena has presented her work at the Bridgeport Art Center, Vault Gallerie, and various independent art exhibitions.
