The inspiration for Stingy Jack originates in Irish folklore. Jack is a deceitful schemer who manipulated others. He finds himself tricked by the devil twice and loses. The devil strikes up a bargain with Stingy Jack and he is condemned to roam the earth forever with a turnip lantern. The Irish immigrants brought their Halloween traditions of carving turnips to America. But here they found the pumpkin easier to carve and that is how the origin of the jack-o-lantern came about.
